WAHLENBERG (1818)
Wahlenberg,
G. 1818 (dated 1821). Petrificata telluris Svecanae. Nova
Acta Regiæ Societatis Scientiarvm Vpsaliensis 8: 1-116, 293-296, pls. 1-4,
7.
Entomostracites paradoxissimus [= Paradoxides paradoxissimus (Wahlenberg,
1818)] (Trilobita, Polymerida, Paradoxididae) - this is plate 1, figure 1 &
described on pp. 34-37. The illustration is a composite from two syntype
specimens (RM Ar. 46147, Paleozoological Department of the Swedish Museum of
Natural History, Stockholm, Sweden) from the Alum Shale Formation (Middle
Cambrian) at Oltorp, Västergötland, Sweden. This is the type species of Paradoxides.
Original diagnosis: caecus, capite semilunari munito eornibus validis
retrorsum exeuntibus, fronte turbinata annulata, cauda spinis trunci postremis
triplo breviore.
Entomostracites scarabæoides [= Peltura scarabaeoides (Wahlenberg, 1818)]
(Trilobita, Polymerida, Olenidae) - this is plate 1, figure 2 & described
on pp. 41-42. This is the type species of Peltura and comes from
the Alum Shale Formation (Upper Cambrian) of Sweden.
Original diagnosis: caecus, capite hemisphaerico antice rotundato,
fronte subovata antrorsum angustiore, cauda utrinque sinuata-tridentata.
Entomostracites spinulosus [= Parabolina spinulosa (Wahlenberg, 1818)]
(Trilobita, Polymerida, Olenidae) - this is plate 1, figure 3 & described
on pp. 38-39. This is the holotype specimen (UPM Sk. 1, University of
Uppsala Palaeontological Museum, Uppsala, Sweden). This is the type
species of Parabolina and comes from the Alum Shale Formation (Upper
Cambrian) of Sweden.
Original diagnosis: caecus, capite late semilunari: angulis posticis
spinulosis; fronte oblonga convexissima, cauda rotundata spinulis trunci
postremis breviore.
Entomostracites gibbosus [= Olenus gibbosus (Wahlenberg, 1818)]
(Trilobite, Polymerida, Olenidae) - this is plate 1, figure 4 & described
on pp. 37-38. This is the holotype specimen (UPM Sk. 2, University of
Uppsala Palaeontological Museum, Uppsala, Sweden). This is the type
species of Olenus and comes from the Alum Shale Formation (Upper
Cambrian) of Sweden.
Original diagnosis: caecus, capite antice truncato planiusculo, fronte
oblonga jugoque dorsali gibboso, cauda triangulari untrinque bidentata.
Entomostracites pisiformis [= Agnostus pisiformis (Wahlenberg, 1818),
although this species was first named by Linnaeus (1768)] (Trilobita,
Agnostida, Agnostidae) - this is plate 1, figure 5 (originally inverted) &
described on pp. 42-43. Of these two syntype spcimens (UPM Vg. 819,
University of Uppsala Palaeontological Museum, Uppsala, Sweden), the cephalon
has been designated as lectotype.
This is the type species of Agnostus and comes
from the Alum Shale Formation (Upper Cambrian) of Sweden.
Original diagnosis: caecus hemisphaericus marginatus; fronte
teretiuscula.
Entomostracites bucephalus [= Paradoxides paradoxissimus? (Wahlenberg,
1818)] (Trilobita, Polymerida, Paradoxididae) - this is plate 1, figure 6 &
described on pp. 38-39. This specimen (UPM Sk. 3, University of Uppsala
Palaeontological Museum, Uppsala, Sweden) appears to be the labrum (hypostome)
of a paradoxidid trilobite.
Original diagnosis: caecus, capite late semilunari: angulis posticis
spinulosis; fronte oblonga convexissima, cauda rotundata spinulis trunci
postremis breviore.
